The fifth film I had the pleasure of seeing at TIFF 2024 was John Crowley’s “We Live in Time”, which has recently hit theatres.

This new romance-comedy follows Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) who are brought together by a surprise meet-cute encounter brings them together and completely changes their lives. The couple embarks on a path challenged by the limits of time, and they learn to cherish each moment of their unconventional and decade-spanning love story.

I’d been eagerly anticipating this film ever since the casting announcement; as a longtime fan of both Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, I knew their collaboration would be something special.

While I already admired them as two of the industry's most compelling actors, this film truly solidified their status as cinematic powerhouses. Their performances in “We Live In Time” display exceptional depth and sensitivity that speak to their skill and dedication.

From beginning to end, the film guides viewers through an emotional journey, inviting us to root for Almut and Tobias as they navigate love’s complexities. The characters, along with the storyline, lead you through moments of joy, heartbreak, and reflection, creating a rich experience that leaves you both invested in and moved by their story.

The chemistry between Pugh and Garfield is simply unparalleled. Their raw, honest portrayals make their on-screen love feel so genuine that it’s hard to believe these two aren’t a real-life couple.

Their performances bring an extraordinary authenticity to their characters' love, making it easy for the audience to become completely immersed in their relationship.

Beyond the outstanding performances, John Crowley’s direction deserves immense praise. His decision to structure the film by weaving together three distinct timelines was brilliant, allowing viewers to experience the relationship in its entirety.

This storytelling choice gives insight into how different choices impact the characters’ lives, allowing us to see the full scope of their love and struggles from multiple perspectives.

The film is a beautiful reminder to live each day fully, to appreciate loved ones, and to show ourselves kindness, even amid life's unpredictability. Its themes resonate on a universal level, reminding us of the fragility and importance of time in our relationships and choices.

Overall, I give “We Live In Time” four out of five stars.

If you enjoyed “Five Feet Apart (2019)” or “The Fault in Our Stars (2014)”, this film is for you.
