After years in production purgatory, Five Nights At Freddy’s will finally be coming to the big screen. The teaser trailer for the long-awaited movie dropped on May 17th, with 47 seconds of Chuck-E-Cheese flavoured horror and nostalgia, and quickly shows off some of what we can expect when the film does hit theaters.

The movie, a direct adaptation of the cult-classic video game of the same name, brings us to Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, a knock-off Chuck-E-Cheese family entertainment restaurant. We get started with some grainy, corporate-esque employee video, with kids playing and a single adult woman adorned with the goofy, button-covered red vest of a cliche cheap chain diner.

Then it’s a quick shot of Freddy and the other animatronic animal puppets, before jumping right into a slow zoom-in of what remains, a derelict, almost condemned-looking building sitting quietly in a dark, empty parking lot.

From there, it’s quick shots showing off our main character, Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), the creepy interior aesthetic of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, and our animatronic antagonists, all set to the soundtrack of this corporate spiel of happiness and fun. And then finally, a swift descent into Saw-like madness, with restraints, spinning blades, children running in forests, the always enjoyable Matthew Lillard, and red-eyed bears, dogs, ducks, and god knows what other mechanical pets from hell.

Overall, the production quality looks like it will hold up pretty well, even more so than I would have expected from a niche movie FNAF. The shots we get play with colour and focus nicely, and the villains look….well, believably existent. It does give off a Willy’s Wonderland vibe to it, but realistically, that Nic Cage horror flick was a pretty obvious rip off of FNAF, so it’s to be expected.

So what do we know about the movie going forward? Well, filming wrapped up at the beginning of April, finally finishing up after a grueling 8 year process trying to get the film off the ground. The release date (as it currently stands) is October 27, 2023, so fingers crossed we don’t see any changes there.

And, most interestingly, Scott Cawthon, one of the movie’s co-writers, noted that he had already signed on for a second and third movie, which are entirely dependent on this first Emma Tammi-directed stab going well.

So who knows? We may get Five Nights at Freddy’s, we may also get 10 or 15. That remains to be seen, but we’re definitely looking forward to seeing this one either way.
