Fans of the Netflix drama series Sweet Tooth had mixed emotions of both excitement and sadness when the streaming platform announced that the show would be returning for a third season, but it would also be their final one.

Sweet Tooth follows a post-apocalyptic world where a virus (The Great Crumble as they begin to call it) has wiped out much of humanity, and children are born as hybrids with animal features

The hit series premiered back in 2021, and is based off of the popular comic book series of the same name by Jeff Lemire.

The show’s cancellation shocked many fans due to the fact that when season 2 released on April 27, it quickly earned 48.3 million hours viewed during its first four days.

In a recent press release creator, showrunner and executive producer Jim Mickle revealed that although the story is coming to an end the team is proud of the final season they have created.

“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life,” Mickle said. “At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be,”

“The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going,”

He went on to say “Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.”

Season 3 of Sweet Tooth has already finished filming and is set to premiere on Netflix in 2024.
