The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) has recently announced via a statement that they will not be picketing the 76th Annual Tony Awards, which is set to take place on June 11 at the United Palace in New York City.
In a recent statement the WGA wrote “Tony Awards Productions (a joint venture of the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing) has communicated with us that they are altering this year’s show to conform with specific requests from the WGA, Therefore the WGA will not be picketing the show.”
Although it is unclear what alterations will be made to the regular format of the Tony Awards, the awards show will proceed as previously scheduled. The New York Times has reported that it is likely this year’s Tony Awards will not include scripted content and will instead consist solely of awards presentations and musical performances.
The president of the Actor’s Equity Association, Kate Schindle, took to social media and tweeted out her thanks to the WGA for allowing for the awards show to take place.
“Thank you, @WGAWest and @WGAEast. @ActorsEquity members: time to double down on showing up at their pickets.” the tweet wrote.
The 76th Tony Awards will occur on June 11 and will air at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramount+. The Tony Awards are a celebration of Broadway’s finest performances and are regularly used as a way to promote Broadway’s productions to public audiences.
